News from Dekalb County CEO Burrell Ellis
 Posted: December 2nd, 2010 @ 4:40pm
 Dear Neighbor:
Soon we will say goodbye to 2010 and welcome the New Year that lies ahead. As we
approach the end of this year, I wish each of you a happy, safe and enjoyable holiday
season.
Last month, we honored the veterans in our community and I hope each of you had
a happy Thanksgiving. We also celebrated former DeKalb County Solicitor-General
Robert James as he began his career as our new District Attorney. Robert is a well-respected
member of the legal profession and an excellent asset to the DeKalb community.
As 2011 approaches, I look forward to continuing to serve the community I love.
May the New Year bring joy, happiness and success to each of you.
- CEO Burrell Ellis

County Chief Executive Officer Burrell Ellis recently attended the Mayor's Summit
of the Americas Competitive Forum at the invitation of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.
Ellis was the only county-level executive included in the global discussion of
mass transit, public private partnerships and transit-oriented mixed-use communities.
Ellis, Reed and other mayors around the globe discussed the increasing interconnectivity
of the global landscape and how to make it easier to do business, exchange ideas,
and share knowledge in a cooperative effort to improve the quality of life for the
Western Hemisphere.

Ring in the new year by taking Marquel's Pledge
Marquel's Pledge [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=to7f5vdab&et=1103939651583&s=475&e=001ygC4ks4kigwPPKJ1ZgSwdyd14jqildrNFtW-sV9mnGIFpZT74DNIwbe2aEJ7VAeo2mu6BXLKvN2QWKlZ-Vcq0xM-lx5FahwK0jTLZc3NR5xwyQH_3XhZb6DPO7gXsXH0PDRDS5TzBk06oa_oTCC5MpLJYu2cjofR]As
residents ring in the New Year, DeKalb County reminds them to celebrate without
gunfire and make the commitment to encourage others in their communities to do the
same by taking Marquel's Pledge, a community campaign to end celebratory gunfire
in DeKalb County.
Marquel's Pledge was created in honor of 4-year-old Marquel Peters, who was struck
and killed while in church New Year's Day 2010 by a bullet believed to have been
fired by a New Year's Eve reveler.
In an effort to prevent additional tragedies from occurring due to this reckless
behavior, the county is encouraging ammunition dealers to refrain from selling
bullets on the days leading up to New Year's Eve. In addition, the county is working
with citizens, neighborhood groups, community organizations, churches, and businesses
to educate their neighbors, community and patrons about the dangers of celebratory
gunfire and to encourage citizens to refrain from this dangerous practice, which
leads to serious injuries and fatalities.
DeKalb County's long-term goals for Marquel's Pledge include influencing legislators
to enact stiffer penalties for those who fire weapons to celebrate and educating
the community throughout the year in an effort to change this behavior.

DeKalb County Office of Neighborhood Empowerment (OneDeKalb) and the Green Commission
recently joined efforts to host the DeKalb Neighborhood Summit and Green Expo at
Georgia Perimeter College. The event provided county residents with important empowerment
information and offered them the opportunity to learn the latest information about
environmentally-friendly products and services.
This year, more than 400 citizens, representing more than 100 community and civic
organizations, participated in the summit and expo. For the first time, the event
included an extensive offering of workshops, such as How Community Partnerships
Help Build a Healthy Community, Funding Your Neighborhood Projects, and Strategies
to Improve the Quality of Life in Neighborhoods. Also new this year was Let's Talk
DeKalb, a townhall-style session featuring DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer
Burrell Ellis and Commissioners Kathie Gannon, Jeff Rader and Sharon Barnes-Sutton.
