| State Senate Special Election - May 11th | March 22, 2010 @ 2:52pm | There will soon be an announcement for the special election to replace David Adelman in our District 42 State Senate office. Gene
David Adelman, who represents Decatur and the rest of District 42 in the Georgia State Senate, was confirmed Friday by the U.S. Senate as ambassador to Singapore. His confirmation is expected to lead to his resignation from his state senate seat within the next week.
The resignation will trigger a special election, which has already attracted a slate of competitors lining up for the empty seat.
President Obama nominated Adelman as the next ambassador to Singapore in November 2009, after the state senator headed up local and state efforts to turn-out voters in Obama's favor in the 2008 presidential election. The nomination had been held up not only because of the current intense legislative battles in Washington, but recently because of the heavy snow that knocked Congress out of session on February 9th.
Despite a reputation as one of the more progressive legislators under the Gold Dome, Republican Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, congratulated the Democrat Adelman, recounting to the Atlanta Business Chronicle that Adelman "worked diligently to represent his constituents." Cagle continued, "While we will miss him . . . I am confident he will embrace his new position as U.S. ambassador with the same work ethic and leadership."
Although the race will not officially be underway until the governor calls for a special election, which could come as early as the end of the month, three local candidates are actively pursuing the soon-to-be-vacant seat. Democrat Jason Carter kicked-off his campaign in the second week of December, followed soon-thereafter by another Democrat Tom Stubbs. Libertarian David Montané entered the race last month.
In an email to supporters on Friday Carter congratulated Adelman, whom he called an "exceptional state senator."
Stubbs, a Decatur lawyer and Winnona Park resident, told Decatur News Online in a January interview that he sees this campaign as "an amazing chance to represent the neighbors and neighborhoods" where he grew up and has lived for most of his life.
Carter, the grandson of the former president, said that, as stae senator, he hopes to "make a difference in the everyday day lives of people in a community like ours."
Montané, a small business owner who lives in unincorporated DeKalb between Decatur and Avondale Estates, said in an interview to be published soon on Decatur News Online that, as a Libertarian, he stands for "more freedoms, smaller government and lower taxes." He thinks that he could make a real impact in this race, commenting that "this special election will be as watched in Georgia as Scott Brown's election in Massachusetts was watched across the country."
Certainly Carter's entry into the race has garnered national attention, given his family history. His grandfather's stance on Israel has already arisen as an issue for him. However, Carter told Jim Galloway of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "the Georgia Senate doesn't set Middle East policy."
In terms of fundraising, the Georgia Secretary of State's office shows that Carter held a wide early lead. In his end of the year filing Carter reported over $82,000 in contributions and over $76,000 cash on hand. Stubbs reported collecting $500 by the end of 2009. Montané had not filed a report but he said recently that he had raised "a few thousand dollars."
The Secretary of State's office listed no other candidates filing for a run in the Georgia State Senate District 42 race as of March 20. |
