Recipe for Potting Soil Mix February 25, 2009 @ 11:43am
A simple recipe for homemade potting soil mix, courtesy of our resident Nelson Brown:

INGREDIENTS
1 Cubic Foot peat moss (if tightly baled, remove from bag, and fluff with your hands)
1 Cubic Foot perlite
2 Cups powdered not pellitized garden lime

Put on a tightly fitted dust make before you begin. Pour the materials onto a dry carport floor or onto your driveway. Add the 2 cups of pwdered garden lime. Use a clean hoe to througoughly mix the ingredients. As you mix, spray a fine mist of water onto the mixture to aid in wetting. When everything is mixed, shovel the soil into your containers. Any leftover soil can be stored in a closed plastic garbage bag.

REPOTTING A PLANT
It can be difficult to remove plants from a pot in which they have grown for several years. Here are a few tips:
1. Spread newspaper on a counter of some type.
2. Flip the pot upside down, and place on the edge of the coungter. Support the plant with one hand.
3. Strike the pot bottom sharply wit your palm to loosen th eplant and lower it from the pot.

Look for Walter Reeve's books on Georgia Gardening in any bookstore or go to his website to order an autographed copy.
