Mason Mill Park RedevelopmentNovember 20, 2009 @ 6:08am
The last presentation of the Mason Mill Park redevelopment plan was presented November 19th. I was pleased to see that the earlier more intensively developed schemes were scaled down.

The storm water filtration pond was placed, where the dog run is now. The dog run was moved south into unused area, where there will be a pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks. On the east side of the tracks, the historic water works ruins will be a featured area. One of the old circular tanks will be refilled as a water feature. The new south end of the park to Desmond Drive will be linked with a pedestrian trail, but little else, recognizing its flood plain status. To the north on the east side are trails linking to Medlock Park and eventually further, possibly to Little Creek.
The north side of the park will get a variety of trails connecting to North Druid Hills. I would have liked to connect across tracks here to the Medlock trail, but flood plain would have forced building elevated boardwalk, so walking to the south bridge is required. Amenities such as play area are added at the north to benefit adjacent homeowners.

In all a sensitive plan, that'll refurbish the tennis center and community building, rather than replace them; add more features spread further throughout the park; add safer controlled access to more areas, better connecting existing and new amenities. Now we need to consider the priorities, adjust final plans, and lobby for sufficient funds to implement the plans. Mason Mill is the regional park for District 2, and deserves this upgrade for better access and greater utilization.
