Kittredge Park Cleanup April 19thApril 5, 2009 @ 1:49pm
The Friends of Kittredge Park have scheduled another clean up day on April 19th from 10am-1pm. The invasive species are getting cleared out, and the park is much more open. The Parks Department has shown us the first draft of the Request for Engineering Proposal, which should soon be released. When that contract is let, we want to be ready with suggestions of what we expect to see in this newest of District 2 parks. Please come out to take a look, help with the clean up, and be ready with suggestions when the public hearings begin.

Very disappointing day at this clean up. No one from LaVista Park showed up, except myself. Even the County did not send anyone, or tools. Most of us had gotten used to the surplus of tools brought by the County, so only a few of those in attendance had tools. Instead the group decided to explore the park and plan out future work and trails. It was good to see the County finally took a bush hog to the open center area of the park. There is now a nice clearing, even with several weeks of growth. Someone also built a new replacement creek bridge to connect the path from Holly Lane to Natahalla Court. Debris from last months clean up has yet to be removed. We noticed that only one major oak was downed by last weeks storm and one pine was snapped off. That was good news.
The Friends of Kittredge Park spent the remainder of our time discussing why so few people are interested in this newest and most wild park in Central Dekalb. I am interested in any suggestions how to get more people involved. If the neighborhoods don't claim and use this resource, Dekalb has little incentive to invest in, develop, and maintain this park.
