Neighborhood Watch and Security

If you have an emergency situation or have noticed some type of unusual activity:
- Call 911 Immediately - (DeKalb County allocates resourses based on 911 calls received)
- Notify the Neighborhood Watch Coordinator
We have two levels of security in LaVista Park
The first level is the FREE and voluntary Neighborhood Watch program, certified by DeKalb County.
The Neighborhood Watch Program is one of the most effective and least costly ways to prevent crime and reduce fear. Neighborhood Watch fights the isolation that crime both creates and feeds upon. It forges bonds among area residents, helps reduce burglaries and robberies and improves relations between police and the community.
Residents should be aware that their responsibilities include:
- Know your neighbors; exchange home, work and emergency phone numbers, types of vehicles and other information with your neighbors and Block Captain.
- Let a neighbor know when you are going to be away from home as well as notifying the LaVista Park Patrol, if you are a subscriber to the LaVista Park Civic Association
- Make sure your home is secured.
- Keep a watch for suspicious persons and vehicles.
- Call 911 to report any suspicious activity or crime incidents that occur at your home or that you witness in the neighborhood. This is an important first step. Dekalb County uses the number of 911 calls for a given area to help allocate resources. When in doubt... MAKE THE CALL!
- Call or email your Section Vice-President with details about the suspicious activity or crime after you have called the police. Please do not call or email the Patrol or Webmaster.
- Learn more about Resident responsibilities.
The Watch Coordinator maintains a Resident Identification Map for most streets used to locate and list the residents along with their home and emergency contact numbers. If you would like to receive a map or have your information added, please contact your Section Vice-President.
LaVista Park employs off-duty DeKalb County police officers for a neighborhood patrol. These officers patrol our neighborhood in their personal cars, not county police cars. You may see them driving slowly through the neighborhood - sometimes unmarked, other times a magnetic LaVista Park Patrol sign may be seen on their door.
Volunteers are our LifeBlood !
The second level is a Civic Association Membership which includes a Security Patrol subscription available to all residents.
Enrollment in the Civic Association is on a subscription basis at $185 per year (June 1 - May 31) and includes one individual membership in the Association. Patrol participants receive a sign for their yard and special check of their property when away or on vacation.
When you are going to be out of town, you may leave a House Check Request in the Security Patrol mailbox adjacent to the neighborhood park entrance on Brookforest. Let them know the dates you will be gone and leave a local emergency telephone number.
You may also let them know if anyone will be entering your house, or if you are expecting workers or pet sitters, etc. The Patrol officers will do an extra check of the doors and windows of your house while you are away.
Also, if you are having contractors in and out of your house, the Patrol Officers will monitor your house for persons other than your authorized contractor.
If you need to know the location of the patrol mailbox, or would like additional information, please contact our Watch Coordinator.
